From Kapil's stellar captaincy to Lal's all-round heroics, key reasons behind India's 1983 World Cup win

Kapil Dev's inspirational captaincy was a major factor which led to Indian team believing in its abilities and going the distance to win the 1983 World Cup.

One of cricket's most dramatic events unfolded exactly 36 years ago on this very day when Kapil-Dev led Indian team stunned the all mighty Windies side to lift their maiden Cricket World Cup title. India had truly arrived on the world stage by inflicting one of the biggest upsets in one day cricket at the historic Lord's cricket ground in London. India's win over the all conquering Windies is still hailed as arguably the biggest upsets in the finals of the ICC World Cup. Here are some of the major reasons which were instrumental behind  India becoming champions in 1983 World Cup Kapil Dev - Charismatic and inspirational leader Kapil Dev's inspirational captaincy was a major factor which led to Indian team believing in its abilities and going the distance to win the World Cup. Dev led from the front with some belligerent batting and potent seam bowling to contribute to India's fairy-tale win. Dev played an unbelievable 175-run knock against Zimbabwe to bail India out of trouble when the chips were down. The charismatic Indian skipper ended as India's top scorer with the bat (303 runs) and accounted for 12 dismissals with the ball. Yashpal Sharma - India's unsung hero with the bat Yashpal Sharma was the self less cricketer who donned many a roles in the team's batting order. Be it opening the innings with Kris Srikanth against some lethal swing bowling or playing the sheet anchor's role in the middle overs, Sharma always put team interest above his personal motives and in a way was India's unsung hero. With Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Kris Srikanth in pretty poor form, it indeed was Yashpal who was India's unsung hero with the bat.
