Champions Trophy 2025: With Rohit's future in Test cricket uncertain, the selection committee might be evaluating leadership alternatives for ICC Champions Trophy.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might consider premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya as a strong contender to succeed Rohit Sharma as India captain for ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
With Rohit's future in Test cricket uncertain and his decision to skip IND vs AUS 5th Test match against Australia in Sydney, the selection committee might be evaluating leadership alternatives for ICC Champions Trophy.
Champions Trophy 2025: Who will replace Rohit Sharma as India captain if veteran opener decides to retire ahead of CT 2025 tournament?
Hardik Pandya seems to be the number one choice to captain India in Champions Trophy 2025 if Rohit Sharma announces retirement before the tournament. Pandya's captaincy experience over the years, both in IPL and international cricket, versatility as an all-rounder and ability to perform under pressure proves his credentials.
A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source reportedly told myKhel, "Hardik's ability to lead in high-pressure situations and his experience as both a player and leader make him an ideal candidate for ICC tournaments like the Champions Trophy."
Why Hardik Pandya is the preferred choice for India captaincy in Champions Trophy 2025
Suryakumar Yadav, India's current captain in T20Is, is yet to secure a consistent spot in the ODI lineup, ruling him out as a likely candidate for the 50-over captaincy in Champions Trophy 2025.
Other potential successors, such as Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, are also under consideration. However, Shubman Gill may need more time to mature into a leadership role. This leaves Hardik Pandya as the leading choice for ODI captaincy.
Hardik Pandya served as India vice-captain in white-ball cricket until 2024 T20 World Cup. After Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is, Hardik was seen as the natural successor. However, due to fitness concerns, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed T20 captain, while Shubman Gill was promoted to vice-captaincy for both ODI and T20 formats.
Given his proven track record, Hardik Pandya seems to be the preferred choice of the selectors to take over team India's leadership reins for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 if Rohit Sharma decided to retire ahead of the marquee tournament.
