Brian Lara Congratulates Gayle After Surpassing Record

Gayle overtook Lara's record for the most ODI runs (10,405) by a West Indies batsman. The Universe Boss, who required just nine runs to overhaul Lara's total runs, scored 11 runs to achieve the landmark

Windies flamboyant opener Chris Gayle scripted history  to attain a major milestone in his cricketing career, in the second one day international vs India at Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Sunday. Gayle became the first West Indian cricketer to play 300 one day internationals. Gayle overtook Lara's record for the most ODI runs (10,405) by a West Indies batsman. The Universe Boss, who required just nine runs to overhaul Lara's total runs, scored 11 runs to achieve the landmark, before getting out to left arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed. The 39-year-old Gayle also went past legendary Brian Lara to enter the elite 300-ODI club list, who played 299 ODIs between 1990 and 2007, in the match at the Queen's Park Oval. Veteran Brian Lara congratulated Chris Gayle after the latter surpassed him as the team's highest run scorer in ODI cricket. "Congratulations @henrygayle most runs by a West Indian in ODI cricket," Lara tweeted. West Indies lost the second one day international to India, giving the visitors a crucial 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series. The third and final ODI of the series is scheduled to take place in Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad. During a press conference in WC 2019, Gayle had hinted that he would retire from international cricket after home Test series against India in August-September. Gayle, who played the last of his 103 Tests in September 2014, will not get a farewell Test match against India on his home ground of Sabina Park in Jamaica. Despite the Universe Boss' desire to have a final international appearance vs India, West Indies selectors on Friday resisted naming him in the Test squad for two-match series.
