'Heartbreaking': Bangladesh Women's Team Captain Nigar Sultana On Playing 'Home' T20 World Cup In UAE

Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana talked about the missed opportunity to play a T20 World Cup 2024 at home.

Even though Bangladesh are technically playing a 'home' T20 World Cup, they are having to play in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Notably, the tournament was shifted to UAE and across two venues- Dubai and Sharjah- amid tensed political situation in Bangladesh and the violence prevailing in the country. What it meant was that it robbed the Bangladesh Women's team to play on home soil even though it is the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) who remain the designated hosts of the competition.

Bangladesh registered a win over Scotland in their first match and their captain Nigar Sultana talked about the missed opportunity to play a T20 World Cup 2024 at home.

"It means a lot. Initially, it was very heartbreaking because we were always bearing in mind that we were able to play in front of our home crowd. But this team, the people looking here today, it was brilliant, we got quite a few people supporting Bangladesh," Sultana said after Bangladesh's historic win over Scotland in their T20 World Cup opener.

"As a professional team, I think we should move on and not be thinking about playing in Bangladesh in front of a home crowd now but still being able to play here and we are pretty fortunate," she added.

The win over Scotland was Bangladesh's first win in the competition since 2014. Batting first, Bangladesh may have mangaed to post 119/7 in their 20 overs. In response, despite Sarah Bryce's 49, Scotland could only muster 103, losing the match by 16 runs.
