Manmohan Singh Death Live Updates: Former PM Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday, December 26. He was admitted to the emergency department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi after his health deteriorated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday offered condolences over his predecessor's demise and stated that Manmohan Singh rose from humble origins and went on to become a respected economist. "He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives," PM Modi said in a post on X.
A week-long national mourning was declared following the former PM's death. Manmohan Singh's last rites will be performed with full state honours.
Singh, who served as the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year, ending his political career in the Upper House after 33 years. He had entered the Rajya Sabha after he was named the Finance Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao-led government in 1991.
He was a Rajya Sabha member from Assam for five consecutive terms, starting from October 1, 1991, to June 14, 2019. He was elected again to the House from Rajasthan following a short gap. He was a member from Rajasthan since August 20, 2019, and his term ended on April 3.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had lauded Singh's role as a member of the upper house and highlighted that his contributions would never be forgotten. He made these remarks during the retirement of the Rajya Sabha members earlier this year.
While ending his iconic budget speech in Parliament in July 1991, Singh had said, "No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come. I suggest to this august House that the emergence of India as a major economic power in the world happens to be one such idea".
Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah village which is now Pakistan's Punjab province.
