Babar Azam faces backlash on social media after stepping down from Pakistan’s white-ball captaincy as this is the second time in a year’s time that he has resigned from captaincy duties.

Babar Azam stepped down as the white-ball captain of the Pakistan team on October 2 (Wednesday). Babar, in a social media post, stated his desire to focus more on his batting performance citing captaincy as an added workload. Notably, this is the second time that he has given up the captaincy of Pakistan team, with the first time being back in November last year after Pakistan’s poor performance in the ODI World Cup 2023.

Babar's announcement of his resignation as captain elicited a range of reactions from fans and cricket enthusiasts on social media.

After being reappointed as Pakistan team’s captain in T20Is and ODIs, Babar’s captaincy tenure saw poor team performances against England where they lost a four-match T20I series by 0-2. Pakistan’s performance under Babar dipped even further as they made a group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2024.
