His popularity was on full display in Kolkata when Woman FIDE Master Bristy Mukherjee, who clinched the All India Women Rapid event (Event B) at the Tata Steel Chess India Festival 2024, touched Carlsen’s feet on stage to seek his blessings during the tournament's closing ceremony on November 17 (Sunday). Carslen, who was there to hand over the trophy to the winner, was initially taken aback but soon found himself blushing after Mukherjee’s gesture. The video of the same has gone viral on social media.
The World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen himself pulled off a stunning double at the Tata Steel Chess India tournament, securing the blitz title with a round to spare in Kolkata on Sunday. This victory came just days after he secured the rapid title.

Bristy Mukherjee secured the Women Rapid event at the Tata Steel Chess India Festival tournament with a perfect 7/7 score. Upon being called to receive her trophy, she first sought blessings by touching Viswanathan Anand’s feet before turning to Carlsen. The 20-year-old then touched the feet of the Norwegian, leaving him blushing and grinning widely.

Magnus Carlsen Secures A Double At Tata Steel Chess India Festival
Widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players, Carlsen secured the blitz title just days after claiming the rapid title. Carlsen staged a brilliant comeback against India’s Arjun Erigaisi in the penultimate round and capped off the tournament in style, defeating another Indian in Vidit Gujrathi in the final round to finish with three consecutive wins and a total of 13 points to claim the blitz crown.
This triumph marked Carlsen's second double victory in Kolkata, mirroring his success from 2019. Filipino-American Grandmaster Wesley So secured second place, while Arjun Erigaisi finished third, followed by R Praggnanandhaa in fourth and Vidit Gujrathi in fifth.
