SpaceX’s Starship 36 exploded during a routine static fire test at Starbase, Texas. No injuries reported as officials confirm a “catastrophic failure” and an investigation is underway.

During a routine static fire test at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas, Starship 36 experienced a catastrophic malfunction and exploded shortly after 11 p.m., according to a Facebook post from Cameron County authorities.

SpaceX confirmed the incident on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the spacecraft, which was being prepared for its tenth flight, encountered a significant anomaly while stationed on the test stand.

SpaceX’s Starship 36 just exploded in a massive fireball prior to launch.

The company added that a designated safety perimeter was maintained during the procedure, ensuring all personnel remained safe and accounted for. The Starbase team is now working alongside local officials to secure the site and surrounding areas. Authorities emphasized that there is no danger to nearby residents and urged the public to stay away while recovery efforts are ongoing.

In a response post SpaceX posted on X, "On Wednesday, June 18 at approximately 11 p.m. CT, the Starship preparing for the tenth flight test experienced a major anomaly while on a test stand at Starbase. A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for. 
Our Starbase team is actively working to safe the test site and the immediate surrounding area in conjunction with local officials. There are no hazards to residents in surrounding communities, and we ask that individuals do not attempt to approach the area while safing operations continue."

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the explosion.
