The last Somvati Amavasya of 2024 falls on Monday, December 30, 2024, during the Krishna Paksha of Pausha month. The Amavasya Tithi begins at 4:00 AM on December 30 and concludes at 3:56 AM on December 31. As per the Udaya Tithi (sunrise-based calculation), December 30 will be observed as Somvati Amavasya.

Rituals To Appease Ancestors On Somvati Amavasya:

Amavasya is dedicated to the ancestors and is considered an ideal day for rituals to ensure their peace and blessings. Here are some rituals suggested by experts for the Pausha Somvati Amavasya:

  • Tarpan Ritual:
    Begin the day by bathing early in the morning.
    Offer tarpan (water offering) using black sesame seeds, white flowers, and kusha grass while remembering your ancestors.
    Performing tarpan is believed to provide relief from Pitra Dosh.
  • Worship The Peepal Tree:
    After bathing, pour water at the roots of a Peepal tree.
    Offer prayers, perform seven circumambulations, and light a lamp using mustard oil mixed with black sesame seeds.
    According to belief, the Peepal tree houses ancestral spirits, and serving it yields blessings akin to visiting sacred pilgrimages.
  • Recite the Pitra Chalisa:
    Chant the Pitra Chalisa to pacify upset ancestors.
    Organize meals for Brahmins and donate items such as black sesame seeds, curd, milk, clothes, fruits, and grains to the needy.
