Where To Place Lamps On Somvati Amavasya

  • Outside The House, In The South Direction – The south direction is considered the domain of Yam. On Somvati Amavasya, a mustard oil lamp should be lit in the south direction outside the house for the ancestors. It is believed that during the Pradosh period on this day, the ancestors return to their realm, and the light of the lamp guides them on their path.
  • For Goddess Lakshmi – The northeast corner of the house is believed to be the abode of deities. Lighting a lamp in the northeast corner on Somvati Amavasya attracts Goddess Lakshmi to the home, bringing blessings of wealth and abundance.
  • Near The Peepal Tree – On Amavasya, a sesame oil lamp should be lit near the Peepal tree. This brings blessings from the ancestors and Lord Vishnu, and it also pleases the ancestors.
  • Main Door – On Somvati Amavasya, place ghee lamps on both sides of the main door and keep a vessel of water there. This should be done after sunset. It is believed that this brings prosperity and well-being to the home.
