The Appearance Of Lord Harihar

In the Harihar form, the right side represents Lord Shiv with symbols of Rudra, while the left side reflects Lord Vishnu. Lord Harihar holds a trident and a spear in his right hand, and a mace and chakra in his left. On his right stands Goddess Gauri, and on the left, Goddess Lakshmi.

The Legend Behind The Harihar Avatar

According to a popular story, once Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma prayed to Lord Shiv. Pleased with their devotion, Shiv offered to grant them a boon. Lord Brahma asked Shiv to be born as his son. Although Brahma initially failed in his attempt to create the universe, Shiv later fulfilled the boon.

On the other hand, Lord Vishnu asked for deep devotion toward Shiv. Pleased again, Lord Shiv gave half of his body to Vishnu, creating the Harihar form, Shiv on the right and Vishnu on the left.

Spiritual Significance Of Harihar

The Harihar Avatar holds deep spiritual meaning. Lord Shiv is worshipped as the destroyer, and Lord Vishnu as the preserver. This form shows that creation continues through both destruction and preservation, completing the cycle of the universe.

Importance Of Worshipping Harihar In Sawan

During the sacred month of Sawan, worship of the Harihar Avatar holds special religious significance. Sawan is dedicated to Lord Shiv and falls within the Chaturmas period. According to belief, during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu rests in the cosmic ocean, and Lord Shiv takes responsibility for the universe. It is also believed that Shiv resides on Earth during this time. That’s why worshiping the Harihar form in Sawan is said to bring the blessings of both Lord Shiv and Lord Vishnu.
