Lohri 2025: Know The Reason Behind Celebrating Lohri Across Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, And The Entire Country

Celebrated with great enthusiasm across Punjab, Haryana, and the entire country, Lohri is marked by the joy of sharing and enjoying peanuts, jaggery sweets, popcorn, and offering them as prasad.

Lohri 2025: Lohri, considered a significant festival for farmers, marks the end of the harvest season and is celebrated with grandeur, especially in Punjab. During the festival, farmers light a sacred fire to honor the Fire God. Lohri is observed across India, including Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, but the celebrations in Punjab are especially vibrant. People circle the fire, offering traditional sweets like gajak and rewri, which is considered highly auspicious.

Similar to Holika Dahan, the Lohri bonfire is created using cow dung cakes and wood. Families gather around the fire, sing, dance, and celebrate. Women often hold their infants near the fire, a practice believed to ensure the child’s health and ward off evil eyes.

Significance Of Lohri:

According to the hindu scriptures fire is regarded as the mouth of the gods. Farmers believe that offering a portion of their harvest to the fire conveys their gratitude to the Sun God and Fire God. The act symbolises a prayer for abundance and blessings, ensuring that no one faces food scarcity. In Punjab, Lohri holds immense importance, particularly for newlyweds and families with a newborn, who celebrate their "first Lohri" at home with blessings from elders.

The Story Of Dulla Bhatti:

Dulla Bhatti, a local hero of Punjab during Emperor Akbar's reign, is remembered fondly during Lohri. Known for his bravery, Dulla Bhatti rescued young girls from being sold and arranged their marriages, earning him the title of Punjab’s saviour. He is celebrated for redistributing wealth from the rich to the poor and for protecting women's honour. One famous tale recounts him marrying off a poor girl as if she were his own sister, symbolising his commitment to justice.

Special Importance For Farmers:

For farmers, Lohri marks the arrival of a new harvest and the transition from winter to spring. They light bonfires and perform rituals, including offering wheat stalks and corn to the fire. The night is filled with singing and dancing, reflecting the cultural and religious significance of the festival for Punjabis.

Lohri Traditions:

In Punjab, Lohri is also known as Tilodi, derived from til (sesame) and rodi (jaggery and bread). Sharing and consuming sesame seeds and jaggery on Lohri is an integral tradition. The festival is associated with stories of Dulla Bhatti and Goddess Sati. It is believed that on this day, Sati sacrificed herself in Daksha Prajapati’s yagna. The festival also honours Dulla Bhatti, whose legacy of courage and compassion is celebrated through songs and dances.

How Lohri Is Celebrated:

Lohri is celebrated with much enthusiasm on the last night of the month of Pausha. As winter ends and spring arrives, families and communities come together in fields and homes to celebrate. Bonfires are lit, around which people sing and dance, throwing offerings like rewri, peanuts, puffed rice, and corn kernels into the flames. Special dishes are prepared, and people revel in the festive spirit with music, dance, and joy.

Celebrating The First Lohri:

The first Lohri after a marriage or the birth of a child is celebrated with great fervor. Newlyweds and families of newborns host grand gatherings to mark the occasion. Unmarried girls wear colourful clothes and go door-to-door, collecting Lohri offerings. Singing traditional Lohri songs and dancing to the beats of dhol, gidda, and bhangra bring people together in a spirit of unity and happiness.
