Important Guidelines To Follow During Kanya Pujan

  • On the day of Kanya Pujan, invite the young girls to your home with respect and warmly welcome them. They are considered embodiments of Goddess Durga. Seat them at a clean and tidy place in your home.
  • During Kanya Pujan, wash the feet of the young girls and apply a tilak on their foreheads using kumkum.
  • Always perform Kanya Pujan during an auspicious muhurat, as doing so brings the full blessings of the ritual and the grace of Goddess Durga.
  • For Kanya Pujan, make sure to invite 9 young girls to your home. Additionally, never turn away any girl who comes—welcome and seat her with respect. Along with the 9 girls, also seat one boy (Langur), as it is considered essential.
  • While giving gifts to the girls during Kanya Pujan, try to offer items they would like. Avoid gifting anything in black colour. After the puja, present them with gifts according to your capacity and devotion.
  • During Kanya Pujan, serve food to the young girls with love and respect. After the meal, seek their blessings by touching their feet, and then bid them farewell with warmth and gratitude.
  • Make sure to invite girls between the ages of 2 to 10 for Kanya Pujan, as this age group is considered ideal and spiritually significant for the ritual.
  • Show respect and affection to the girls during Kanya Pujan. It is not merely a ritual but a symbol of devotion toward the goddess embodied in them. Treat them with honour and bid them farewell with love.

Why Should A Boy Be Included In Kanya Pujan?

According to mythology, Goddess Durga granted Bhairavnath a boon that wherever he is worshipped alongside her, there will be prosperity and liberation from the cycle of birth and death. It is believed that the presence of Bhairavnath ensures that no obstacles hinder auspicious rituals, as he possesses the power to ward off all negative energies and protect the sacred space. This is why, during Kanya Pujan, along with nine young girls, one young boy—symbolising Bhairav or “Langoor”—is also invited and worshipped.
