When Is Buddha Purnima? Know Time, Significance, And All About This Auspicious Day

Buddha Purnima marks the birth anniversary, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death) of Gautama Buddha.

Buddha Purnima 2025: Buddha Purnima is also known as Vaishakh Purnima, which is the most significant festival for Buddhists, as it is the anniversary of the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (death) of Gautama Buddha. The day falls on the full moon of the Hindu month of Vaishakh, and it is considered most auspicious by adherents of Buddhism all over the world.

Buddha Purnima 2024: Date And Time

According to the Vedic Panchang, the full moon of the Vaishakh month will begin on May 11 at 6:55 PM, and it will end on May 12 at 07:22 PM. In Sanatan Dharma, dharmic days are to be counted based on the rising (udaya) tithi. Therefore, it will be observed as Vaishakh Purnima on May 12. Thus, Buddha Purnima, which is celebrated on the day of Vaishakh Purnima, will also fall on May 12.

Buddha Purnima Celebration:

On this auspicious day, devotees of Buddha perform some special rites that begin with bathing early in the morning and wearing white clothes, symbolising purity. The idol of Buddha is bathed in holy Ganga water, and incense and lamps, flowers, sandalwood, and fruits are offered. Peaceful prayers are chanted, while some recite the teachings of Buddha throughout the day.

Sacred Rituals And Ceremonies:

There are specific rituals, performed on this day, where the idol of Buddha is anointed with water, milk, and paste of sandalwood. Devotees perform meditation, and chant mantras.

Many places also host readings from texts of Buddhism like the Dhammapada and Jataka Tales. The recitation generates virtues of compassion, discipline, and wisdom, all of which are Buddha's teachings.

This day is also celebrated by worshipping the Bodhi Tree, which is the tree beneath which Buddha attained enlightenment. People light lamps around it, make the parikrama, and observe silence over deep meditation.
