Why Ashadha Is Spiritually Powerful

  • Guru Worship: Ashadha is ideal for paying homage to teachers and spiritual guides.
  • Lord Vishnu's Slumber Begins: On Devshayani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is believed to go into cosmic sleep, marking the start of the Chaturmas, a four-month period during which auspicious ceremonies are generally avoided.
  • Jagannath Rath Yatra: One of the major festivals of this month, this grand chariot procession attracts millions of devotees.

Importance Of Sundays And Saptami Fasts In Ashadha

According to the Skanda Purana, worshipping Lord Vishnu and Surya during Ashadha helps cure illnesses and extends lifespan. Fasting on Sundays and Saptami tithi is believed to fulfill desires. The Bhavishya Purana mentions that offering water to the Sun brings victory over enemies.

Throughout Ashadha, the Sun resides in zodiac signs ruled by its friendly planets, amplifying its positive effects. As per Skanda Purana, the presiding deity of this month is Vamana, the dwarf incarnation of Vishnu. Special prayers and fasts are held on Shukla Dwadashi to honor him.

The month marks the change in season, a transition from scorching summer to the onset of monsoon. Ayurveda refers to this as a Sandhikaal, a crucial time for maintaining health. With the Sun in Gemini, the risk of infections and seasonal diseases increases significantly.

Ancient Legends: Ram’s Surya Worship

Skanda and Padma Puranas describe Surya as a visible deity. Even Lord Ram, before his battle in Lanka, offered prayers to the Sun for strength and victory, as narrated in the Valmiki Ramayana. Offering Arghya (water) to the Sun in Ashadha is said to bring respect, success, and triumph over adversaries.

How To Perform Surya Arghya In Ashadha

Worshipping the Sun at sunrise boosts confidence and brings positive energy. According to the Bhavishya Purana, Lord Krishna explained to his son that Surya is the only deity we can see daily, making regular worship deeply rewarding.

  • Wake up before sunrise and bathe—use Gangajal if a pilgrimage bath isn’t possible.
  • Fill a copper vessel with water, rice, and flowers. Offer it to the rising Sun.
  • Chant “Om Ravaye Namah” while offering the Arghya.
  • Pray for strength, wisdom, health, and honor.
  • Light incense and a lamp as part of the Sun’s worship.
  • Donate items related to Surya: copper utensils, yellow/red clothes, wheat, jaggery, or red sandalwood.
  • Observe a fruit-only fast post worship for spiritual benefits.

Ayurveda Tips For Ashadha Wellness

Ashadha ushers in the rainy season, increasing the spread of waterborne diseases, fungal infections, and indigestion. Conditions like malaria, dengue, and viral fevers peak during this time. Adjusting diet and hygiene practices is crucial for prevention.

To prevent fungal infections and boost immunity:

  • Use neem, clove, cinnamon, turmeric, and garlic.
  • Take Triphala churna with warm water and consume Giloy.
  • Avoid tomatoes, pickles, curd, and sour foods.
  • Drink boiled water to avoid infections.
  • Eat seasonal fruits like mangoes and jamun, but avoid bael fruit.
  • Cut down on spicy and fried foods.
  • Include saunf and hing for better digestion.
  • Maintain strict cleanliness.

Worship Of Lord Vamana In Ashadha

Thursdays of Ashadha are especially dedicated to Vamana, the dwarf incarnation of Lord Vishnu. After fasting and prayers, a child is symbolically treated as Vamana and fed. Donating essentials and performing Annadan is encouraged on both Ekadashis.

Vamana Avatar: The Story Of King Bali

In Satya Yuga, the demon king Bali conquered heaven. To restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, the son of Aditi. Disguised as a Brahmin, Vamana asked Bali for three steps of land. Despite opposition from his guru Shukracharya, Bali agreed.

In his Vamana avatar, Lord Vishnu appeared as a dwarf and asked King Bali for three steps of land. Vamana then expanded to a cosmic form, covering the Earth with one step and the heavens with the second. With no space left, Bali humbly offered his own head for the third step. Vishnu, pleased with his devotion, sent him to rule Patal Lok and restored balance to the universe.

Pleased, Vishnu sent him to rule Patal Lok and restored heaven to the gods.
