Turkish officials say a deal on a U.N. plan to unblock the exports of Ukrainian grain amid the war and to allow Russia to export grain and fertilizers will be signed Friday in Istanbul. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's office said that he, U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres and officials from Russia and Ukraine will oversee the signing ceremony.
Japan warned of escalating national security threats stemming from Russia’s war on Ukraine and China’s tensions with Taiwan in an annual defense paper issued Friday, as Japan tries to bolster its military capability and spending. The annual defense white paper, approved by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s Cabinet on Friday, highlights the need for Japan’s military build-up to address security concerns and seeks to gain public support for a stronger military and increased budget, which Mr. Kishida’s governing party aims to double in coming years.
Ali Sabry takes charge as Foreign Affairs Minister; Dinesh Gunewardena took oath as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on Friday. A stalwart of Sri Lankan politics, Gunawardena, earlier served as the foreign minister and education minister. President Ranil Wickremesinghe is also set to swear in his Cabinet on Friday comprising members of the previous government.
In a bid to strengthen its defence, China’s People’s Liberation Army has tested an advanced Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) close to the border that could target critical Indian military bases. The system tested at a height of more than 5,300 metre in the Xinjiang Region recently comes amid the 16th round of military talks held last week between the two countries. It is likely that China will deploy the PHL-16 MLRS on the Sino-Indian border.

Droupadi Murmu scripted history on Thursday by becoming India's first tribal President in the one-sided contest, defeating Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. Congratulations kept pouring in for NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu today, a day after she was elected as the 15th President of India. The Election Commission issued a 'certificate of election' to her today, who has emerged victorious in the presidential poll.
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday reacted to the recommendation of CBI inquiry made by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena into the liquor policy of the AAP government and alleged violations by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. Kejriwal said that the entire case was “false” adding that he has known Sisodia for past 22 years and that “he is honest”. Delhi LG on Friday recommended an investigation by the CBI into alleged violations of the Delhi Excise policy and “deliberate and gross procedural lapses” directly naming Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.
The Railway ministry recently informed the Parliament that the cost of granting concessions to passengers "weighs heavily" on the national transporter. BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Friday questioned the government's decision to scrap the concession given to senior citizens in train tickets and asked why this relief to the elderly is seen as a "burden" when MPs continue to get subsidy on train fare.
A 35-year-old man who arrived from UAE to Kerala earlier this month, has tested positive for the monkeypox virus, making it the third case of the virus in India. The previous two cases were also detected in Kerala. Health Minister Veena George said the Malappuram native arrived in the southern state on July 6 and was undergoing treatment at the Manjeri Medical College there. His health condition is stable, she added. The minister also said all those who were in close contact with the patient are being closely monitored.
The Uttar Pradesh government has accorded 'Y' category security to Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president Om Prakash Rajbhar, an alliance partner of the Samajwadi Party on Friday. SP president Akhilesh Yadav did not invite Rajbhar to a meeting convened in Lucknow in support of Sinha early this month, while another party ally and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary attended it. Later, Rajbhar announced the SBSP would support Murmu but maintained that his six-MLA party was still part of the opposition grouping that fought the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections together. The SBSP had contested the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections held earlier this year in alliance with the SP. However, the ties between the two allies have been strained of late.

In the newly released Russo Brothers movie The Gray Man, Indian star Dhanush, in his second Hollywood film, gets a grand entry. He also gets to display his fighting skills as he combats with both Ana de Armas and Gosling in a longish scene. Despite two charismatic leads The Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans and an efficient Dhanush, the film is just serviceable.
K-pop big label HYBE, who also manages BTS, announced a new girl group, New Jeans, on July 22. The new girl group was created by Min Hee-Jin, who was previously a creative director and board member at SM Entertainment. The girl group dropped a surprise music video titled Attention as they embark on their journey.
Veteran actor Anupam Kher is set to essay the role of revolutionary leader J P Narayan in Kangana Ranaut's directorial venture "Emergency". Written and directed by Ranaut, the film is billed as the story of a watershed moment in the political history of India. She also features in the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the movie. Ranaut said she feels privileged to have the veteran actor on board.
Singer Ricky Martin's husband Jwan Yosef posted a photograph of the couple after the court appearance, captioned with "Truth prevails". According to Variety, Ricky Martin's nephew withdrew his harassment and affair claims against the singer in a July 21 court appearance, which effectively closed the case.
