Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has arrived in Singapore on a flight from the Maldives, where he had fled after mass protests over his rule. Singapore's government said he had been "allowed entry on a private visit". It is not clear if Mr Rajapaksa will stay or move to another destination. 

Prime Minister Mario Draghi's government is on the brink of collapse after the 5-Star Movement said it won't take part in a parliamentary confidence vote on a cost-of-living aid package scheduled for Thursday. 

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak extended his lead in the UK prime ministerial race on Wednesday with the highest number of votes at 88 in the first round of voting by Conservative Party MPs, which narrowed down the race from eight to six candidates on the shortlist.

The Delhi Police on Thursday filled the chargesheet against 37 people in the Jahangirpuri riots case, which took place in April this year, in Rohini court. Delhi Police said, according to the investigation so far and the evidence on record, the incident was a continuation of the demonstrations against CAA and NRC in Shaheen Bagh in 2019 and 2020, as well as the rioting in North-East Delhi in February 2020.

The Maharashtra government led by Eknath Shinde on Thursday restored the pension scheme meant for those political activists who were imprisoned during the Emergency imposed in 1975. The scheme, which was introduced by the Devendra Fadnavis government in 2018, was scrapped by the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) dispensation in 2020.

Ahead of the Monsoon Session, the booklet triggered a war of words between the opposition parties and the centre. Usage of many words - such as 'corruption', 'corrupt', 'Jumlajeevi', 'tanashah', 'Dictator', 'black' and 'Khalistani' are among those that have been banned. Senior members of Parliament including Jairam Ramesh, Derek O'Brien and Randeep Surjewala Priyanka Chaturvedi have questioned the intent behind such a notification.

Petrol will now cost ₹ 5 less and diesel ₹ 3 less in Maharashtra, the state cabinet decided today. This means, from tomorrow, petrol will cost around ₹ 106 a litre and diesel ₹ 94 in Mumbai. Slight variations are possible as there are other components at play when oil companies set the daily price.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has been admitted to Kauvery hospital here for 'investigations and observation for Covid related symptoms', said a bulletin released by the hospital at 12.20 PM on Thursday.

Hollywood star Kevin Spacey on Thursday pleaded not guilty at London's Old Bailey court to four charges of sexual assault against three men. The 62-year-old star was wearing a blue suit and blue tie as he stood in the dock at the UK's top criminal court. He spoke to confirm his name and age before pleading not guilty to four charges of sexual assault and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

The author of ‘The Kite Runner’ expressed his joy and said that he has never been prouder of her. He said that the process was painful for her. The author said that his daughter is sober to the cruelty that trans people are subjected to, but is strong and undaunted. 

The Indian squad for the 5-match T20I series against the West Indies has been announced by the BCCI. Out of form batsman Virat Kohli and pacer Jasprit Bumrah have been rested.
