Manipur police has said that security forces have recovered over 1,100 arms and more than 14,000 ammunition from the hill ad valley districts of the state.

Manipur News: The Manipur police has said that the information that arms and ammunition have been looted from different police stations and armouries in both hill and valley districts only is 'misleading'. Sharing an update on the security situation in the violence-torn state, the police said that the security forces have recovered more than 1100 arms and over 14,000 ammunition from the hill and valley districts in the state and that continuous raids are being conducted to recover more such weapons. This comes as a fresh outbreak of violence on Friday rocked the state again. According to PTI, at least three people died including a father-son duo in the alleged attack. The deceased were said to be from the Meitei community. Police told the agency that the three were gunned down while sleeping and later slashed with swords at Kwakta in the district.

"There is report vide a press release dated 05th August, 2023 highlighting looting of arms and ammunitions from different police stations and armouries in the valley districts only. The information is misleading to the extent that arms and ammunitions were looted from different Police Stations and armouries of both hill and valley districts," the Manipur police tweeted.

"Security forces have been continuously raiding in the hill and valley areas to recover the looted arms and ammunitions. As a result of which 1057 arms and 14201 ammunitions have been recovered in the valley districts and 138 arms and 121 ammunitions have been recovered in the hill districts," it added.

Informing about the incident on Thursday in Manipur, the police said they recovered 15 arms while one person was arrested after he tried to snatch weapons from the forces.

"In the day before’s (03.08.2023) incident, the security forces have been able to recover 15 arms. Today also there was an attempt to snatch weapons from a police team at Toupokpi Police Outpost in Lilong Chajing, Imphal-West district. However, Police were alerted and they could chase and recover all the four weapons. One person was arrested and the car used by the miscreants was also recovered. Raids are continued to arrest other culprits," the tweet read.

The police further said, "Today (05.08.2023) evening in a gunfight between combined team of 5/9 GR & 21 SF with militants at village A. Mungchamkom under New Keithelmanbi Police Station, one individual who is cadre of non-SoO organisation was arrested and one SLR along with 01(one)magazine and 50 rounds were seized from his possession."

Earlier on Friday, news agency PTI reported citing officials that a mob comprising the majority community broke into a police armoury and stole weapons, including over 19,000 bullets of various calibres. Reacting to it, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh said that strong action will be taken against those involved in the incident, as quoted by PTI.
