Guwahati: A 32-year-old man was gunned down allegedly by a Manipur Rifles (MR) personnel at a police commando outpost in the Yaingangpokpi area in Manipur’s Jiribam district on Monday night. Denouncing the incident, an irate mob on Tuesday vandalised the house of the MR personnel Loitam Arunta Singh at Yairipok Bamon Leikai in the state’s Thoubal district. Singh is reportedly a rifleman of the 5 MR and is attached to the police commando unit.
Though the motive behind the killing is yet to be established, the deceased, Oinam Gandhi Singh, of Thoubal district’s Charangpat Mamang Leikai area, was supposed to move to the state capital Imphal from Jiribam by road on Monday but he missed the trip and later reportedly visited the police commando outpost to meet one of his relatives. At around 8.20 pm, the deceased had dinner at the outpost and a gunshot was heard, after which, the lifeless body of Oinam was found lying in a pool of blood.

Oinam was ostensibly gunned down by Arunta with his service weapon, reportedly an AK 47 assault rifle. His body was later sent to the Jiribam district hospital for post-mortem. Personnel from the Jiribam police station later arrested Arunta, seized his service weapon, and registered a case against him.
Meanwhile, angry local residents of the Charangpat Mamang Leikai area formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) against Oinam’s killing and submitted a memorandum to state Chief Minister N Biren Singh through the Thoubal Deputy Commissioner (DC) seeking termination of Arunta from service and taking up exemplary legal action against him. The committee also demanded compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family and a government job to the next of kin of the deceased.
The JAC further said that until and unless the demands are complied with by the government, Oinam’s body would not be claimed.
