Indian-Origin Kamala Harris Drops Out Of 2020 US Presidential Race; 'We'll Miss You', Trump Takes Jibe

Harris, whose is of mixed Indian and African heritage, had been polling poorly in recent week.

New Delhi: Indian-origin Senator Kamala Harris has dropped out of the Democratic presidential race, narrowing the Democratic field of candidates to 15. 55-year-old Harris made the sudden and surprising announcement on Tuesday, that came during a call with her campaign staffers. After knowing the news, US President Donald Trump took a jibe at the Democrat Senator. Responding to a tweet posted by his former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who mocked Harris' decision to withdraw her bid for the top post, Trump tweeted, "Too bad. We will miss you Kamala!". While hitting back at Trump, Harris said, "Don't worry, Mr. President. I'll see you at your trial," referring to the impeachment inquiry initiated against him for his dealings with Ukraine. Harris, whose is of mixed Indian and African heritage, had been polling poorly in recent week. She was among first major Democratic Party leaders to announce her presidential run in last January, which was attended by a massive crowd of over 20,000 supporters. While she made an impressive performance during her first Democratic party debate against former vice president Joe Biden, she had not been faring well during the subsequent debates. In the last debate, she entered into a verbal dual with Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, another Democratic presidential aspirant. In a video message on Twitter, Harris has said that she was finding it difficult to manage her campaign due to paucity of financial resources and vowed to continue her fight for the future of the country by defeating Trump. A latest poll released on Monday saw her dropping down to a mere three per cent, reflecting that her campaign was struggling to make traction ahead of what is being viewed as one of the most polarised elections in American history. The Democrat Senator from California was the first African-American woman to announce a run for the White House in 2020.
