Earthquake Of Magnitude 5.3 Jolts Nepal

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck Nepal's capital city Kathmandu on Sunday.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 struck Nepal's capital city Kathmandu on Sunday. As per the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake was recorded at 7:24 am. However, there was no report of any death or damage resulting from the tremor.

In a video shared by the news agency PTI, residents were seen rushing out of their houses following the earthquake tremours.

On October 16, Nepal's Sudurpaschim province was hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent aftershocks killed around 9,000 people in 2015. As the government’s post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA) report noted, Nepal is the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world.

Earlier this month, an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck western Afghanistan, as per the US Geological Survey. The earthquake hit an area where more than 2,000 people were killed after a similar tremor at the weekend. USGS said that the quake occurred at a shallow depth at around 05:10 am local time (00:40 GMT), with its epicentre about 29 kilometres north of the city of Herat.

The earthquake came days after an earthquake followed by strong aftershocks killed dozens of people in western Afghanistan. As per the US Geological Survey (USGS), six earthquakes occurred in western Afghanistan on Saturday, and the largest one was at a magnitude of 6.3.

Earlier in April, an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 on the Richter scale jolted 10 kilometres North West of Kathmandu in Nepal, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said. According to NCS, the quake occurred at a depth of 25 kilometres.
