Indian Woman Dies After Jumping Off Singapore Cruise, Search Underway: Report
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on Tuesday said that the search to locate the woman was underway.
An Indian woman aboard a Singapore cruise died as she jumped off the ship after going missing. Reeta Sahani, 64, along with her husband Jakesh Sahani were on their way back to Singapore from Penang aboard the Spectrum of the Seas. At the middle of the night during their four-day cruise, Jakesh, 70, woke upto find his wife was missing from their room, as per a report by the Straits Times. After he failed to find his wife on the ship, he informed the crew about it.
The crew informed the retiree that the vessel’s overboard detection systems had been alerted that something had fallen from the ship into the Singapore Strait.
The couple’s son, Apoorv Sahani, who was not with his parents on the ship, alleged that the cruise company was “washing their hands off” and sought help from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of External Affairs to find his mother.
“My mother was travelling on a Royal Caribbean cruise (spectrum of the seas) from Singapore. She has gone missing from the ship since this morning. Cruise staff are saying she jumped, but they have not shown us any footage and are washing their hands off,” Sahani tweeted.

He also alleged that he had asked for the CCTV footage to confirm the identity of her mother.
“We’ve asked to see the CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage, but so far we’ve not received anything yet for us to confirm that it was her. All we know is that the ship’s crew thinks she jumped,” he told the Straits Times.
He also said that his mother did not know swimming and his father was made to go through an interview with the police that lasted a few hours.
“She was on a holiday enjoying herself and then this whole thing happened. It doesn’t make sense,” he added.

Later in another tweet on Tuesday, Sahani said that her mother had passed away after “the cruise liner finally did share the footage with us.”
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on Tuesday said that the search to locate the woman was underway.
According to the report, MPA has deployed two patrol craft to help the search in Singapore’s waters, and an additional 22 commercial vessels have responded to the authority’s request to keep a lookout.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Coast Guard and the Republic of Singapore Navy are also assisting in the search, covering the stretch of Singapore port waters and the Singapore Strait.
