VW T-Cross: Hyundai Creta Rival Leaked, Could Be India-Bound

The production-spec SUV looks identical to the 2016 T-Cross Breeze concept and will be based on the soon-to-be-localised MQB-A0 platform

The 2016 Volkswagen T-Cross Breeze concept gave us a preview of VW’s first-ever compact SUV, the T-Cross. Now, images of the production-spec version of the T-Cross, which is based on the MQB-A0 platform and set to make its official debut later this year, has been leaked online.

While it was a convertible SUV in its concept form, the production-spec T-Cross will be a regular compact SUV offering. Both the concept as well as the production-spec version of the SUV look similar from the front. In fact, the front profile seems to have been inspired by VW’s flagship SUV, the Touareg. There's a chrome outline that runs throughout the width of the T-Cross, giving an impression that the headlamps and the grille are a single unit. The large and square-shaped fog lamps are identical to the ones seen on the concept. Given that the front fascia of the T-Cross looks similar to the concept’s, we expect the rear profile to follow the same route too.

The interior and equipment list of the T-Cross should be similar to that of the India-bound sixth-gen Polo. Expect the compact SUV to get features such as a fully digital instrument cluster and up to 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, both of which are available with the sixth-gen Polo as well. Like other MQB-A0-based cars, the T-Cross is expected to be offered with a 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol and a 1.6-litre TDI diesel.

Volkswagen Group is currently working on localising the MQB-A0 in India and when completed, it will be known as MQB-A0 IN here. Besides replacement models of the Polo, Vento and the Skoda Rapid, the VW Group is also likely to introduce the T-Cross and Skoda Vision X-based compact SUVs in the country soon. These cars are expected to be part of VW Group’s second product onslaught in the Indian market, which it likes to call ‘India 2.0’. Expect these cars to roll out from VW’s Chakan facility in Maharashtra.

If VW decides to launch the T-Cross in India, expect it to be priced around Rs 10 lakh and compete against the Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and Duster, and the upcoming Nissan Kicks. It will also have to compete against upcoming SUVs based on concepts such as the Skoda Vision X and Kia SP Concept.
