UK Invites PM Modi For G7 Summit In June, Says Boris Johnson Likely To Visit India "Ahead" Of Summit

Previously, British PM Boris Johnson had accepted the invitation to be the chief guest of the Republic Day Parade this year. However, he had to cancel the visit because of the increasingly Covid-19 cases.

The United Kingdom has invited the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit to be held in the country's Cornwall region in June.

The influential G-7 group consists of UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the USA. Apart from India, Australia and South Korea have also been invited for the summit this year. ALSO READ | Republic Day 2021: No Foreign Dignitary As Chief Guest For This Year's Parade, MEA Confirms

This comes just days after UK PM Boris Johnson cancelled his India visit due to rising Covid-19 cases in the UK. According to a press statement issued today, Johnson is likely to visit India ahead of the G7.

"UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will use the first in-person G7 summit in almost two years to ask leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to seize the opportunity to build back better from coronavirus, uniting to make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous," the statement read.

Previously, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had accepted the invitation to be the chief guest of the Republic Day Parade this year. However, he had to cancel the visit because of the increasingly serious Covid-19 situation caused by the "superspreader" mutant strain in the UK. According to the report, the UK Prime Minister has cited the need to oversee pandemic response as the reason to cancel the visit.

The UK, which formally left the EU on Dec 31, 2020, as part of the Brexit process, will assume in February the pro tempore presidency of the UN Security Council and later this year will host the UN Climate Change Conference COP26.
