Trinamool Congress MLA Samaresh Das Succumbs To Coronavirus, Second TMC Leader To Die Since June
On July 25, the leader was shifted to a private hospital in Salt Lake when the health condition deteriorated and since then the MLA was on ventilator support.
Kolkata: In yet another tragic death due to coronavirus, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker Samaresh Das, aged 74, succumbed at a hospital in Salt Lake during the early hours of Monday almost after a month being detected by the novel coronavirus on July 18. Earlier a three-time party legislator and treasurer Tamonash Ghosh, aged 60, also caught the infection and succumbed in June. This makes Das the second TMC member of the West Bengal legislative assembly (MLA) after Ghosh to have succumbed to the virus in the state.
Das, an MLA from Egra constituency in East Midnapore district, was tested Covid-19 positive on July 18 and got admitted to a local hospital.
Later the leader was shifted to a private hospital in Salt Lake on July 25, when his health condition had worsened and since then the MLA was on ventilator support.
Last month in view of the worsening coronavirus situation in the state, BJP leaders maintained not to hold any protest demonstrations or gatherings for now and party workers also asked not to visit the state BJP headquarters unless it is urgent. The BJP leadership has restricted party activities after MP Locket Chatterjee tested positive for Covid.
So far West Bengal has reported 1.16 Covid-19 cases including 2,428 deaths. With the fresh increase, the overall Covid-19 tally in the country has breached 26-lakh mark and the death toll reached near 51,000-mark.
