The Nexon, with an average monthly sales of about 5,000 units, is the second best-selling car in Tata’s lineup. It is also one of the best-selling sub-4m SUVs in India. With prices starting from Rs 6.15 lakh and Rs 7.18 lakh for petrol and diesel respectively, the Nexon is the most affordable compact SUV in the country and a good option for those looking for a high-rider on a budget (all prices ex-showroom ex-showroom Delhi).

The petrol engine of the Nexon is a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder unit that makes 110PS of maximum power and 170Nm of peak torque. The diesel engine, on the other hand, is a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder unit that makes 110PS/250Nm. Both the engines can be had with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed AMT. We have tested the Nexon with both the available engine options and here’s what we found.

oing by the manufacturer’s claim, the Nexon has a mileage of 17kmpl and 21.5kmpl for petrol and diesel, respectively. However, when tested in real world conditions, their mileage figures were lower in the city, where the petrol Nexon returned 14.03kmpl, while the diesel Nexon managed a mileage of 16.80kmpl. Out on the highway, though, both surpassed their claimed figures with the petrol SUV returning a mileage of 17.89kmpl and the diesel SUV managing 23.97kmpl. As expected, the diesel Nexon is more frugal than its petrol counterpart, by 2.77kmpl in the city and 6.08kmpl on the highway.

Going by the ARAI tested figures, the Nexon is not the most frugal SUV in its class. The diesel engine-equipped Vitara Brezza with 24.3kmpl is the most fuel-efficient car followed by the Ford EcoSport at 23kmpl. When it comes to petrol sub-4m SUVs, the EcoSport and the Nexon have an identical claimed FE figure of 17kmpl. The Vitara Brezza, on the other hand, is not available with a petrol engine as of now.
