MG Motor India has officially announced that it will be launching an all-electric SUV in the Indian market. While the exact date or month has not been shared, MG says it will happen within one year of launching its first product in India. The first SUV is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2019, which puts our ETA for the new e-SUV to be sometime in early 2020. Morris Garages (MG) is the brand that Chinese automotive giant SAIC is bringing to India. Its first product is expected to be a Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier-rivalling SUV and the e-SUV is expected in the first quarter of 2020. The arrival of the electric SUV for India was previously confirmed by SAIC president Chen Zhixin just last month at the MOVE Global Mobility Summit held in New Delhi.

At present, MG does not have any electric vehicle in its product lineup. But another SAIC brand by the name of Roewe does and they launched it in June 2017 - the ERX5, which was also showcased at the MOVE Summit. The China-spec ERX5 was equipped with a 48.3kWh lithium-ion battery that claimed a range of over 400km and produced 115PS of power and 255Nm of peak torque.

However, the ERX5 is not the only all-electric SUV in consideration as MG Motor had also mentioned they were mulling over the possibility of bringing the electric version of the ZS SUV to India. The electric ZS is still under development and is likely to be revealed in the UK market in 2018 itself. It is expected to share tech with its cousin, the aforementioned ERX5.
The all-electric SUV from MG will compete against the Hyundai Kona Electric, which is also expected to launch in India around the same time. The Kona Electric will be locally assembled with an expected retail price of around Rs 25 lakh. We expect MG to price its new e-SUV in the same ballpark.
