Mercedes-AMG E 63 S Launched In India

Three point four seconds. That’s all it takes to reach 100kmph from standstill

Mercedes-AMG has launched the E-Class’ most powerful version in India, the E 63 S 4MATIC+, at Rs 1.50 crore (ex-showroom pan-India). It’s the 12th model from Mercedes-AMG in the luxury carmaker’s Indian lineup.

While it’s fair to call the E 63 S the sportiest iteration of the E-Class, it’s actually a very different car in comparison, and it’s not just the engine that is more powerful. A different set of front and rear bumpers, the grille, bigger 20-inch alloy wheels, and the boot spoiler are the cosmetic differences that you can easily spot. Look closer and you will see that Mercedes-AMG has redesigned the bonnet entirely and the wheel arches are also wider in comparison to the E-Class.

The E 63 S’ dashboard design is similar to the E-Class but there’s nappa leather covering for the instrument panel and beltlines. It also gets a flat-bottom sports steering wheel with crystal grey 12 o'clock marking and contrasting topstitching, AMG crest in the front head restraints, crystal grey seat piping, IWC-designed analogue clock and seat belts in crystal grey. The E 63 S is a 5-seater sedan like the regular E-Class; however, it is not based on the long-wheelbase E- that we get in India and hence its wheelbase is shorter by 140mm at 2939mm.

The E 63 S 4MATIC+ is powered by a 4.0-litre, direct injection V8 petrol engine with twin turbochargers. The engine makes 612PS of maximum power and 850Nm of peak torque. It can make the E 63 S do the 0-100kmph sprint in 3.4 seconds. The engine gets Merc’s AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system which deactivates four of the eight cylinders of the engine under partial load to aid fuel efficiency. The deactivation takes place at engine revs between 1000 to 3250 rpm.

The engine is paired with a 9-speed transmission called AMG Speedshift MCT (Multi Clutch Technology). 4MATIC+ in the car’s name suggests that it has all-wheel drive tech in it but it doesn’t have a fixed front:rear wheel drive torque distribution. In fact, the E 63 S can be driven like a pure rear-wheel drive vehicle as well in the Drift mode.

Over and above, the E 63 S can be driven in 4 drive modes: Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual. The various modes alter response of the engine, transmission, suspension, steering, ESP and all-wheel drive system characteristics.

The Mercedes-AMG E 63 S competes with the BMW M5 in India, which can also do the 0-100kmph stint in 3.4s and costs Rs 1.44 crores.
