Indian tabla player Sandeep Das wins Grammy Award

Los Angeles: Indian Tabla player Sandeep Das has recently been honored by Grammy; biggest award in the world in Music at the 59th Grammy Awards held on February 12, 2017. His collaboration with the Silk Road Ensemble, Singe Me Home' won the Grammy award for Best World Music Album. Prior to this, Sandeep was nominated for Grammy in 2003 & 2009 but could not make it. Photo- Twitter (Photo- Twitter) Sandeep was born in Patna in 1971 and started learning from Kishan Maharaj, under the Indian Guru-shishya tradition at the age of 9. Sandeep Das who started learning tabla at the age of 8, made his stage debut when he was 15 with Sitar maestro Pt. Ravi Shankar. He completed his schooling from St. Xavier's High School, Patna. He graduated in English Literature with gold medal from Banaras Hindu University. (Photo- Twitter) (Photo- Twitter) When Sandeep met with Cello player Yo-Yo Ma in year 2000, his life got totally changed. Yo Yo Ma who has won 18 Grammys, asked Sandeep to perform in USA. Sandeep says that Indians are focused only to academic studies and go for conventional courses like MBBS, IITs, IIMs while less focused on sports, arts & culture. Sandeep lives in Boston, USA with his family.
