UP Elections: SP-BJP Supporters Clash In Ayodhya Ahead Of Voting In Third Phase

UP Elections 2022: Around 59 assembly constituencies from 16 districts will be going to the polls as campaigning for the third phase came to an end on Friday

New Delhi: Supporters of the Samajwadi Party and Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday clashed with each other as the Uttar Pradesh polls are entering its crucial third phase.

The party members clashed with each other while carrying out poll campaigning near Maharajganj Police Station area. Ayodhya Senior Superintendent of Police, Shailesh Pandey on Friday told ANI, "During the campaigning, supporters of both the candidates came face to face near Kabirpur intersection of Maharajganj PS area. Both sides have accused each other of stone-pelting and firing."

"One or two people have received minor injuries. We are probing the matter and strict action will be taken against the culprits. Law and order situation is under control," Pandey added. However, probe is underway.

Voting for the third phase of the elections in Uttar Pradesh (UP) is set to take place on February 20, Sunday. Around 59 assembly constituencies from 16 districts will be going to the polls as campaigning for the third phase came to an end on Friday. The constituencies mostly coming under ‘Yadav belt’ are considered to be Samajwadi Party (SP) stronghold and

Of all these constituencies, the spotlight will be on Karhal in Mainpuri where SP chief and former chief minister Akhilesh Yadav is contesting his maiden Assembly election.

BJP is also consolidating their strategy where they could expect tough competition from Akhilesh Yadav-led SP.

During the third phase of UP Election 2022, 627 candidates are in the fray for 59 assembly seats. In the third phase, there are more than 2.15 crore voters out of which 1.16 crore are males, over 99.6 lakh females, and 1,096 third gender voters eligible to exercise their voting rights. Polling will be held at 25,741 polling stations located in 15,553 polling centers.

BJP had gained in this region since 2014 and is confident of winning more seats than it did in the last Assembly polls.
