Two Burn Victims In ICU Following Steam Leak At Tata Steel Dhenkanal Power Plant

The rest of the victims are in stable condition and are receiving high-quality care, Tata Steel said in a statement.

New Delhi: A day after 19 workers sustained burn injuries following an industrial accident at a Tata Steel Ltd plant in Odisha's Meramandali, the company said that among all the burn victims, two are in intensive care under the vigilant watch of medical professionals, including a team from Tata Steel.

The rest of the victims are in stable condition and are receiving high-quality care, Tata Steel said in a statement.

"Of the 18 burn victims admitted to a private hospital in Cuttack, two remain in intensive care under the vigilant watch of medical professionals, including a team from Tata Steel. The other individuals are in stable condition, receiving continuous, high-quality care. Another individual, initially admitted for a panic attack at the incident site, is now in good health and expected to be discharged shortly," the statement said.

Notably, An accident was reported at a blast furnace of Tata Steel's hot rolled coil factory at Meramundali in Odisha's Dhenkanal district on Tuesday affecting a few people, Tata Steel said in a statement.

The incident took place at 1 pm today during inspection work, said the company in a statement.

"We are saddened to report an accident at the BFPP2 power plant due to escape of steam at Tata Steel Meramandali Works in Dhenkanal, Odisha," said the company in a statement. "The accident occurred at 1:00 pm (IST) today during the course of the inspection work and has affected a few people working at the site, who were immediately shifted to a hospital for further treatment," it added. 

At least 19 people were injured in the accident owing to steam leak and were shifted to occupational health centre inside the plant premises and were then admitted to a hospital in Cuttack, the statement read. All the 19 injured have suffered burn with 2 of them sustaining fractures, said Subrat Jena from Ashwini Hospital in Cuttack. 

"A total of 19 patients from Tata Steel's Meramandali plant in Dhenkanal were brought here. They have all suffered burns. Out of the 19 patients, 2 patients have also sustained fractures, and 6 of them are burnt above 40%. One patient has sustained burns over 70% are getting treated in the ICU," Jena told news agency ANI.
