Tripura Civic Polls: BJP Win 112 Out Of 334 Seats Uncontested, Elections On November 25

BJP Win Civic Polls In Tripura: A total of 785 candidates are in the fray for the remaining 222 seats, for which voting is to be held on November 25.

The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) won 112 out of the total 334 seats uncontested in the civic body polls in Tripura, reported PTI. Monday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations, and the final date of scrutiny had been fixed on November 5.

An official of the state Election Commission informed PTI about the same.

On Monday, 36 candidates, including 15 from the opposition CPI(M), four from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), eight from the Congress, two from the AIFB, and seven independents, withdrew their nominations, the returning officer said.

A total of 785 candidates are in the fray for the remaining 222 seats, for which voting is to be held on November 25.

BJP's first civic election after coming to power in the state

It has to be noted that this will be the first civic election of BJP after coming to power in the border state in 2018. In such a situation, BJP has already made a huge lead by winning 112 seats unopposed. However, after the victory in 112 seats, no BJP or opposition leaders have given any reaction so far.

In the urban local bodies, altogether, there are 334 seats including Agartala Municipal Corporation (51 wards), 13 Municipal Councils, and six Nagar Panchayats across Tripura.

In seven urban bodies- Ambassa Municipal Council, Jirania Nagar Panchayat, Mohanpur Municipal Council, Ranirbazar Municipal Council, Bishalgarh Municipal Council, Udaipur Municipal Council, and Santirbazar Municipal Council there are no opposition candidates

CPM alleged that some candidates were not able to file their nominations due to intimidation from BJP. “Our party workers were attacked and our candidates in five municipal councils and two Nagar panchayats could not submit their nominations following violence occurred since the announcement of the poll date,” Chaudhury said in a press conference late evening as quoted by IE.

Reacting to the allegations, BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said that the CPM has 'lost acceptance' and that they have 'nothing but complaints.'
