Tripura Assembly Polls: TMC Unlikely To Join CPI(M) Coalition, Mamata To Visit State On Feb 6

A top senior official revealed that the TMC will not join the CPI(M)-Congress coalition in the forthcoming Tripura Assembly election, and party supremo Mamata will visit the state on February 6.

In the upcoming Tripura Assembly election, the Trinamool Congress will not join the CPI(M)-Congress alliance, news agency PTI reported quoting a top party leader on Sunday. Tripura Trinamool Congress president Pijush Kanti Biswas announced that TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit the state on February 6 to campaign for party candidates.

“The TMC is not going to forge any electoral understanding with the CPI(M)-Congress combine in the ensuing Tripura Assembly elections because many Congress leaders and workers who had suffered during Communist regime will not vote for their own party”, Biwas was quoted as saying by PTI.

"Our assessment is that the CPI(M)-Congress initiative will face a similar fate as the West Bengal Assembly election in 2021, which is why we will stay away from it," he said, as per the report.

"Trinamool Congress will contest the election in seats where the party has a possibility of winning," Biswas added, "and TMC's doors are open to other parties for an electoral understanding." He stated that Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will arrive in Tripura on February 6 for a two-day visit and will participate in a roadshow, the report said.

"On February 6, the party's supremo will arrive in the poll-bound state to campaign for the party. "She will participate in a road show the next day," he stated further.

Biswas stated that the party's All India general secretary (Abhishek Banerjee) is slated to travel here for the election campaign on February 2. "He will address two election rallies in North Tripura in Dharmanagar and Boxanagar in Sepahijala district," he said.

Furthermore, many top party leaders, including Tollywood stars from Kolkata, are campaigning in the northeastern state. "Today, we will meet with senior party leaders to map out the party's election strategy, including campaigning for the next elections," he stated.

The 60-member Tripura Assembly will be elected on February 16.
