'They Should Look At Andaman Jail': Home Minister Amit Shah Slams West's 'Hypocrisy' On Human Rights

"When I see Andaman Cellular Jail, I wonder how can Western nations talk about human rights," Shah said at the event.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Wednesday, slammed the western nations for preaching human rights to India. Hitting out at the West, the Home Minister said that who ever lectures us on human rights violation should be shown the cellular jail in Andaman, where prisoners from across India were lodged in inhuman conditions.

Shah's remarks came at the book launch event of 'Revolutionaries, The other story of how India won its freedom' by Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister, in the national capital.

"Jo koi bhi humein bhashan dene aata hai, usko ek baar cellular jail ki mulaqat karani chahiye.Andaman ki cellular jail, aur wahan pe di gayi amanaviya yatnayein dekhkar, mai kai baar sochta hoon ke paschim ke desh kaise human rights ki baat kar sakte hai? (When I see Andaman Cellular Jail and the pathetic treatment meted out to the prisoners there, I wonder how can the West talk about human rights violation)," Shah said at the event.

"Those who come to teach us should be once sent to the cellular jail. Freedom fighters from different parts of the country were kept in the jail. If we look at the prisoner’s list of the cellular jail, we will get to know that this was not an isolated effort,” Shah added.

Speaking further he said, "All the prisoners who were actually freedom fighters had to face a lot of cruelty there."

He also stressed that the freedom India got was the "collective" result of everyone.

"The movement led by Congress has a big contribution to the country's freedom. But no other has contributed, this narrative is not right. Because if we analyze the country's freedom, numerous people, organisations, and ideologies and paths had made efforts to reach one destination. India's freedom is the collaborative result of all of this," Shah said.
