CM Race In Rajasthan, MP To JD(S) Power Struggle In Karnataka — The Week Ahead

The BJP will choose its Chief Ministerial candidates for Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in the week ahead, while the JD(S) witnesses a major showdown in Bengaluru.

The Week Ahead will see a major test of strength in JD(S)ahead of the Lok Sabha polls next year as 'ousted' party leader CM Ibrahim convenes the party's national convention in Bengaluru as the party's 'president'.

Meanwhile, as the suspense for Rajasthan and MP Chief Ministers grows, the BJP will hold the legislative party meetings in both states. Picking the CMs for the states will be an extremely crucial job as Rajasthan sends 25 MPs to Lok Sabha and Madhya Pradesh sends 29. On Sunday, the BJP named Vishnu Deo Sai the CM of Chhattisgarh, which sends 11 MPs to the Lower House.

Stay with ABP Live as we try to cut the clutter around the latest news from the political arena and help you understand what is likely to happen in The Week Ahead. Here are the biggest political developments expected to play out this week.

BJP To Stage Protests In Bengal

The West Bengal unit of the BJP has announced plans to stage demonstrations across all blocks in the state on December 11 against the ruling TMC, expressing "solidarity with farmers grappling with economic challenges attributed to crop losses". State unit chief Sukanta Majumdar, addressing reporters in Balurghat, Dakshin Dinajpur district, alleged a lack of crop insurance for farmers in Bengal.

He said that in South Bengal districts, farmers were resorting to desperate measures, including suicide, due to crop destruction caused by natural calamities and a shortage of fertilizers, with the administration turning a blind eye to their plight.

Majumdar pointed to a recent incident during a road blockade in Goghat, Hooghly district, where a policeman's misconduct towards demonstrators went unpunished, highlighting what he deemed an inhumane attitude of the state towards farmers. Emphasizing the severity of the situation, he stated that 50% of farmers, traditionally reliant on cultivation, were being compelled to become migrant labourers.

JD-S Showdown In Bengaluru

Ousted JD(S) Karnataka state president C M Ibrahim is gearing up for a major confrontation with JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda and his family. He has convened the party's national convention in Bengaluru on December 11, assuming the role of the 'state president'. The 75-year-old leader said that the convention would see participation from party members and leaders nationwide.

"We are organising a national-level meeting where we will provide accommodation. State presidents from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala leaders, Rajasthan, and all over the country are coming here," stated the former Civil Aviation Minister during a press interaction. The focal point of the convention is declared to be 'Stand for Secularism.'

Ibrahim, expelled for opposing the party's alliance with the BJP for the Lok Sabha election, defended his position, stating, "I am an elected man. They can't remove me. My father has not appointed me as a president. I have been elected by the voters of the Janata Dal (Secular) leaders."

The convention's objective is to align the party with the I.N.D.I.A bloc rather than the BJP-led NDA. Ibrahim disclosed his contacts with like-minded figures such as Akhilesh Yadav, Nitish Kumar, RJD leaders, K Chandrashekar Rao of BRS, M K Stalin, and Pinarayi Vijayan. Regarding Rahul Gandhi's potential candidacy in the Karnataka Lok Sabha election, Ibrahim welcomed the decision, expressing support from 'his party.'

Alleging EVM hacking in the BJP's victories in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, the expelled JD(S) leader called for the Election Commission of India to conduct elections using ballot papers.

Mizoram Speaker To Be Elected This Week

Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati has called for a three-day assembly session, scheduled to commence on December 12, according to a senior official. Pro-tem Speaker Lalfamkima will preside over the first day, administering oaths to the members and overseeing the election of the new Speaker.

Lalfamkima, elected from the Kolasib constituency, was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker on Friday. The swearing-in ceremony also saw Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma taking the oath as the chief minister of Mizoram, joined by eleven other ministers at Raj Bhavan. With a 40-member assembly, Mizoram is entitled to have 12 ministers, including the chief minister.

Rajasthan, MP To Get Chief Ministers

Rajasthan and MP are the only two states left to get their chief ministers now after the elections. While the BJP won both states, it has yet to name the CMs in the two states. With central observers Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, OBC Morcha head K Laxman, and secretary Asha Lakra presiding over a legislative party meeting on December 11, the saffron party is likely to announce the candidate for the top government job in Madhya Pradesh.

It will be interesting to see whether BJP drops incumbent and four-time CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan in favour of the frontrunners for the post this time — former Union minister Prahlad Patel, newly-elected Dimani MLA Narendra Tomar, Indore heavyweight Kailash Vijayvargiya, state unit chief VD Sharma, or Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Rajnath Singh, Vinod Tawde, and Saroj Pande have been sent to Rajasthan as the party's central observers to help the MLAs elect a Chief Minister. The legislative party meeting date is yet to be announced but it will be held this week. Among the frontrunners for the Rajasthan CM's post are two-time CM Vasundhara Raje, Tijara MLA Baba Balaknath, Rajsamand MLA Diya Kumari and Union ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Arjun Meghwal. The BJP will announce the CM for the western state as well this week.
