SC Rejects Wasim Rizvi's PIL Seeking Ban On 26 Quranic Verses; Imposes Fine

Wasim Rizvi, former chairman of the UP Shia Waqf Board argued that these verses were written to inspire violence and murder against non-Muslims.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has rejected the PIL which sought to remove 26 verse from Quran stating that these verses enticed violence against non-Muslims and promotes terrorism. The petitioner was also fined Rs.50,000.

The petitioner, Wasim Rizvi, former chairman of the UP Shia Waqf Board argued that these verses were written to inspire violence and murder against non-Muslims. Madrasas demanded a ban on their education. He stated that the verses are used as "justifications" by Islamist Terrorist Groups for attacks on non-believers/ civilians.

A bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman heard the petition filed by Rizvi today, April 12th 2021. 

According to ANI, Rizvi, in his petition, said that suitable writ/ directions/ orders may kindly be passed in favour of the petitioner (himself), in the public interest and against the respondents to the effect that the verses/suras contained in the Holy Quran which violate the Law of the land, promote extremism and terrorism.

Rizvi also claimed that these verses pose a serious threat to the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the country, be declared unconstitutional, non-effective and non-functional. He suggested in his petitions an appropriate committee of experts/ religious experts should be appointed for an opinion on the subject matter of the petition in the larger public interest.

According to ANI, Rizvi further stated in his petition that if this Court deems fit that the government of India should be directed to declare its policy on the subject/issue white paper or pass appropriate legislation.
