Soon South Delhi may have “No street dogs”

New Delhi: In a bid to curb the number of stray dogs, South Delhi Municipal Corporation will inaugurate four new dog sterilization centres in the capital early next month.   The centres include Government hospitals in Mundela, Bijwasan, Masoodpur and Nagil.  These centres will be facilitated to sterilize 20-25 dogs every day. The fact that government hospitals will come forward to lay a helping hand to put an end to the stray dog menace is a welcome change. The four new centres will work in tandem with six functional dog sterilization units under the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Despite the fact that the Government and NGOs have been working tirelessly, the growing number of stray dogs has continued to be a sterling problem for the residents.  The step taken by the civic body will put an end to unresolved issue. Stray dogs not only create problems for the residents, but uncontrolled births given them often leave majority of the puppies unattended, leading them to untimely death. The civic body will allot Rs 10.40 crore in its annual budget for the sterilization of street dogs, increasing it from Rs 2 crore in the last fiscal year.
