Photos Show Shaheen Bagh Shooter Joined AAP In 2019, Say Delhi Police; Kejriwal's Party Denies Claims

New Delhi: In what comes as a massive setback for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Shaheen Bagh shooter Kapil Gurjar has admitted to the Delhi Police while interrogation that he had joined the Arvind Kejriwal-led party in early 2019. According to reports, has also recovered photos of Kapil Gurjar with several senior leaders of Aam Aadmi Party from his mobile phone. "In our initial investigation we found some photos from Kapil's phone that establish & he has already disclosed that he & his father joined AAP a year ago. We have taken his 2 days remand," Rajesh Deo, DCP Crime Branch told reporters. The image released by news agency ANI and later by Delhi Police too shows accused Kapil joining AAP a year ago. "We recovered the pictures from his phone during the course of the investigation. Kapil has confessed that he & his father joined AAP somewhere between January-February 2019," Deo said. However, the ruling party in Delhi has rejected the claims made by Police and has denied any links with Kapil Gurjar - accused of opening fire in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh were thousands protesters are sitting on month's long protest against contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Speaking about the same, AAP leader Sanjay Singh said: "Amit Shah is the Home Minister of the country at this time, now just before elections, photos & conspiracies will be found. 3-4 days are left for the elections, BJP will do as much dirty politics as they can. What does having a picture with someone means?" He also shouted communal slogans. A Delhi court here on Tuesday extended by two days the police custody of the accused. As he was produced before the Saket court at the end of his remand period, police sought four-day custody of the accused from Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gurmohina Kaur contending that the source of weapon used by him for the commissioning of crime needs to be traced. After granting Gujjar's custody for two days, the CMM allowed his counsel to meet him for half an hour in the presence of the Investigating Officer (IO). Protests have been going on in the Shaheen Bagh area from the last two months over the newly-enacted citizenship law and the proposed National Register for Citizen (NRC).
