India Successfully Test-Fires Homegrown ‘Bhargavastra’ Counter-Drone System

The rocket underwent three trials at Gopalpur on May 13 in the presence of senior officials of the Army Air Defence (AAD).

A new counter-drone system named 'Bhargavastra', operating in Hard Kill Mode, has been developed and designed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL), marking a significant advancement in tackling the growing threat of drone swarms.

The low-cost micro rockets utilised in this counter-drone system, which achieved all designated objectives, also underwent rigorous testing at the Seaward Firing Range, Gopalpur, according to a report by the news agency ANI.

The rocket underwent three trials at Gopalpur on May 13 in the presence of senior officials of the Army Air Defence (AAD). Among the three trials, two were conducted by firing one rocket each. However, a trial was conducted by firing two rockets in salvo mode within 2 seconds.

All four rockets met their expected performance benchmarks and launch criteria, showcasing the system's cutting-edge technology in countering large-scale drone threats.

‘Bhargavastra’: A Comprehensive Solution Against UAV Threats

Equipped with advanced detection and elimination capabilities, 'Bhargavastra' is designed to neutralise small hostile drones from distances up to 2.5 km.

The system uses unguided micro rockets as a first line of defence, capable of neutralising drone swarms within a 20-meter lethal radius. It also features a previously tested guided micro-missile as a second layer for pinpoint accuracy and effective target engagement.

The system meets the unique operational demands of India's armed forces as it is designed for flexible deployment across the varied terrain, including high-altitude zones above 5,000 meters.

SDAL highlighted the system’s modular design and indigenous development, noting its dedicated rockets and micro-missiles tailor-made to combat UAV threats. An optional soft-kill layer incorporating jamming and spoofing technology can also be added, offering a fully integrated and layered defence solution for all branches of the military.

In this system, being modular, the sensors (Radar, EO & RF Receiver) and shooter can be installed as per the demands of the user and designed to work in an integrated manner for layered and tiered AD cover, enabling targeting at longer ranges.

In addition, it is also designed for effortless integration with existing network-centric warfare infrastructure.

Outfitted with an advanced Command-and-Control Centre incorporating cutting-edge C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) capabilities, the system's radar can identify small aerial threats from a range of 6 to 10 kilometers.

Its Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensor suite enhances accuracy in detecting and tracking low radar cross-section (LRCS) targets. ‘Bhargavastra’ delivers a real-time, comprehensive situational picture, allowing operators to effectively assess and neutralize both individual drones and drone swarms.

This development marks another significant milestone under the "Make in India" initiative and represents a major stride in fortifying the already strong air defence capabilities of nations.
