Prophet Remark Row: After SC Rap, Delhi Police Say Nupur Sharma Joined Probe, Gave Statement On June 18

The Delhi Police's response came after Supreme Court on Friday asked what the Delhi Police had done following the complaint against Nupur Sharma.

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Friday stated that suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma has already joined its investigation in the Prophet comment case. They recorded her statement on June 18 in the case pertaining to controversial remarks made against Prophet Muhammad hurting religious sentiments. The Delhi Police's statement came hours after the Supreme Court castigated Nupur Sharma saying that controversial comments were responsible for whatever communal incidents were happening across the country.

"After the FIR was registered against Nupur Sharma, the Delhi Police sent a notice to Nupur Sharma to join the investigation under Section 41A CrPC. She already joined the investigation and Delhi Police had recorded Nupur Sharma's statement on June 18, 2022," the police stated, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The Supreme Court had asked what the Delhi Police has done following the complaint against Nupur Sharma. "On her complaint a person is arrested, but despite multiple FIRs she has not yet been touched by Delhi Police," the bench noted.

"When you lodge a complaint against someone, that person is arrested but nobody dares to touch you that shows your clout," it added, as per ANI.

When Nupur Sharma's lawyer mentioned that she is joining the investigation and not running away, the SC bench remarked: "there must be a red carpet for you there."

The Delhi Police on June 8 registered a case against several persons including Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal under various provisions for spreading hateful messages, inciting groups, and creating an atmosphere detrimental to the maintenance of public tranquillity.

The Supreme Court on Friday said that Nupur Sharma and "her loose tongue" set the entire country on fire and she is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country.

New agency ANI quoted the Supreme Court as saying that "She (Nupur Sharma) and her loose tongue has set the entire country on fire," adding that "her outburst is responsible for the unfortunate incident at Udaipur, where a tailor was murdered."

Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Nupur Sharma, told Supreme Court that she has apologised for the remarks and withdrew the comments. To this, the SC responded: "She should have gone to the TV and apologised to the nation."

The SC bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala declined the suspended BJP spokesperson's request to transfer to Delhi all the FIRs registered against her across the country and allowed her to withdraw her plea from the top court and avail alternate remedies.
