'Her Loose Tongue Set Country On Fire': SC Slams Nupur Sharma Over Prophet Remarks, Asks Her To Apologise To Whole Nation

Nupur Sharma Case: The SC castigated suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma for her comments on Prophet Mohammad, saying that she "threatened the security of the nation".

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday slammed suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over the Prophet remarks row saying that she should apologise to the whole country. The apex court noted the unrest in the country following the controversy over her comments on Prophet Muhammad in a TV news debate and also held her outburst responsible for the recent murder at Rajasthan's Udaipur. The remarks came as SC refused to entertain Nupur Sharma's plea to club FIRs in various states for her remark against Prophet for investigation in Delhi. The suspended BJP leader withdrew her plea from the apex court.

New agency ANI quoted the Supreme Court as saying that "She (Nupur Sharma) and her loose tongue has set the entire country on fire," adding that "her outburst is responsible for the unfortunate incident at Udaipur, where a tailor was murdered."

In her plea, Nupur Sharma also mentioned that she was facing death threats. In its hearing, the top court remarked that she has "threatened the security of the nation".

"What is the business of the TV channel and Nupur Sharma to discuss the matter which is sub-judice, except to promote an agenda?" the SC bench questioned, as reported by ANI.

According to news agency PTI, the SC said that Nupur Sharma's remarks against the Prophet were made either for cheap publicity, political agenda, or for some nefarious activities.

Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Nupur Sharma, told Supreme Court that she has apologised for the remarks and withdrew the comments. To this, the SC responded: "She should have gone to the TV and apologised to the nation."

"She (Nupur Sharma) was too late to apologise and withdraw the statement," it noted, further observing that she withdrew the statement conditionally, saying if sentiments hurt.

As Nupur Sharma's advocate told the bench that she has a threat to her life, Justice Surya Kant responded by saying, "she has threat or she has become a security threat? The way she has ignited emotions across the country, she is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country."

Despite Multiple FIRs She Has Not Yet Been Touched By Delhi Police: SC

The Supreme Court also asked what the Delhi Police has done following the complaint against Nupur Sharma. "On her complaint a person is arrested, but despite multiple FIRs she has not yet been touched by Delhi Police," the bench noted.

"When you lodge a complaint against someone, that person is arrested but nobody dares to touch you that shows your clout," it added, as per ANI.

When Nupur Sharma's lawyer mentioned that she is joining the investigation and not running away, the SC bench remarked: "there must be a red carpet for you there."

Recently, the row over the comments on Prophet Muhammad by the suspended BJP spokesperson intensified as per protests were witnessed across the country along with global outrage. As the controversy gained international attention, India reiterated that the controversial remarks concerning Prophet Mohammad do not reflect the views of the Government and added that action has been taken by concerned quarters against those who made the comment.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has suggested Nupur Sharma's lawyer to approach the High Court concerned in this case.
