PM Modi Credits India's G20 Success To People, Bids Heart-Warming Farewell To Old Parliament Building

The five-day 'Amrit Kaal' session of the Parliament began on Monday in the old building after an all-a day after an-all party meeting was held in the national capital. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday noted the historic moments that took place in the old Parliament building as the proceeding are set to take place in the new building from Tuesday.  Speaking at the special session of the Parliament in Lok Sabha, Modi said, "This old Parliament building was built with sweat, hardwork and money of our countrymen." Opening the session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that the Parliament proceedings will shift to new building from September 19, Tuesday. "We will go to the new Parliament building but the existing one will always inspire the coming generation," Modi said.

  • "All of us are saying goodbye to this historic building. Before independence, this House was the place for the Imperial Legislative Council. After independence, this gained the identity of Parliament House," he said. 
  • Remniscing his first time entering the Parliament, Modi said, "When I first entered this building as member, I never imagined that I will get so much love from people." 
  • "It is true that the decision to construct this building was taken by foreign rulers but we can never forget and can proudly say that the toil, the hard work and the money that went into the construction was that of my countrymen," said the PM.
  • "Today, the achievements of all Indians are being discussed everywhere. This is the result of our united efforts during the 75 years of the history of our Parliament."
  • "The success of Chandrayaan-3 has not only made India but the world proud. This has highlighted a new form of India's strength which is connected to technology, science, potential of our scientists and the strength of the 140 crore people in the country. Today, I again want to congratulate our scientists."
  • "Today, you have unanimously appreciated the success of G20...I express my gratitude to you. G20's success is that of 140 crore citizens of the country. It is India's success, not that of an individual or a party...It is a matter for all of us to celebrate."
  • "There have been sweet and sour experiences, there has also been an atmosphere of bickering, and sometimes an atmosphere of conflict and sometimes, there has been an atmosphere of joy as well. All these memories are our shared memories, our shared heritage and hence, its pride is also our shared."
  • Speaking about the 2001 terrorist attack, the PM said, "The attack was not on Parliament but on mother of democracy, on our living soul. The country can never forget that incident. I also bow before those who took bullets to their chest to protect the Parliament and all its members, while fighting the terrorists."
  • "This session witnessed decision on Article 370, one nation one tax GST, One Rank One Pension, 10 per cent quota for Economically Weaker Section."   
  • "Many MPs attended the session despite health issues. During the COVID-19 crisis, our MPs attended the proceedings of both of the Houses and performed their duties."

Bills listed under the session's 'Legislative Business' in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, include The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023, The Post Office Bill, 2023, and The Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023.
