PIL In Calcutta HC Challenges Rajiva Sinha's Appointment As Bengal SEC, Hearing Likely Next Week
A PIL was filed in the Calcutta High Court on Monday challenging the appointment of West Bengal election commissioner Rajiva Sinha.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the Calcutta High Court on Monday challenging the appointment of West Bengal election commissioner Rajiva Sinha, as reported by the news agency ANI. The matter is likely to be heard next week. Rajiv Sinha was appointed as the SEC on June 7 and the panchayat elections were declared on June 8 for July 8. The Opposition parties called it a hasty move. Notably, Sinha's appointment was cleared by the Governor.
However, the Governor decided not to accept Sinha's joining letter after the High Court's observations. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has refused to accept the joining letter of State Election Commissioner Rajiva Sinha. This comes after Sinha failed to attend the discussion called by the Governor over the sensitive matter related to the Panchayat election issue, ANI reported citing sources.
The development came after the Calcutta High Court came down heavily on the State Election Commissioner, telling him that he should step down if he finds it difficult to take orders for the deployment of central forces in the state for the panchayat elections. Earlier, the Calcutta High Court ordered the requisition and deployment of central forces in all the districts of the state for the panchayat polls.
Last week on Saturday, Central Forces held a route march in Bolpur town of Birbhum district to instil confidence in the voters. The move came days after the Calcutta High Court order to requisition central forces for deployment in panchayat elections to the West Bengal State Election Commission.
The administration and Bolpur police also joined hands with the central forces to ensure that the election process could be done peacefully in the Panchayat elections. Meanwhile, one company of paramilitary forces reached Jalpaiguri on Friday evening.
The company of the Central Paramilitary Force has been lodged at the Panchayat Training Centre in the Mohitnagar area of Jalpaiguri.
