NIA Registered Record 73 Cases, Held 456 People, Filed 59 Charge-Sheets In 2022: Report

This year, the counter-terrorism agency also filed 59 charge sheets against 368 people and arrested 456 people, including 19 escaped prisoners.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) registered a record-breaking 73 cases in 2022, a 19.67 per cent rise from the 61 instances registered in 2021 and an agency high, news agency ANI reported on Saturday citing a report by the central agency.

35 Jihadi terror instances have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and West Bengal, as per the report.

According to the report, eleven of these incidents were linked to Jammu and Kashmir, ten to Left Wing Extremism, five to the North East, seven to the outlawed organisation Popular Front of India (PFI), four to Punjab, three to the gangster-terror-drug smuggling nexus, one to terror funding, and two to Fake Indian Currency Notes.

This year, the counter-terrorism agency also filed 59 charge sheets against 368 people and arrested 456 people, including 19 escaped prisoners. According to the NIA, two of the suspects were deported and one was extradited from another country, the report said.

According to the NIA, 38 cases were decided by various courts across India in 2022, with all of them ending in conviction. According to the report, 109 people have been sentenced to hard imprisonment and fines, with six receiving life sentences.

"Overall conviction rate as on date is 94.39 per cent," ANI quoted NIA.

According to the central agency, eight people have been designated as individual terrorists under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 2022, and the necessary action is being conducted against them, the report said.

"As part of its efforts to cut off and choke terror funding, the NIA successfully held the 3rd Ministerial level 'No Money For Terror' Conference on November 18-19, 2022, which was attended by 78 countries and 16 multilateral organisations," the agency noted.
