Mumbai Police Makes Wearing Seat Belts Must For Drivers, Passengers Of 4-Wheelers From Nov 1

In a statement, the city police traffic division instructed all motorists and vehicle owners to install seat belts in four-wheelers by November 1 or face prosecution.

The Mumbai police on Friday said wearing seat belts will be compulsory for four-wheeler drivers and co-passengers in the metropolis from November 1 or face prosecution, news agency ANI reported. 

The development comes after Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of Tata Sons, was killed in a car accident in Maharashtra's Palghar district last month, it was discovered during an investigation that the businessman, who was seated in the back seat of the Mercedes, was not using a seat belt.

Mistry died as a result of the impact of the crash after his vehicle collided with the divider of a bridge on the Surya river in the neighbouring district.

In a statement, the city police traffic division instructed all motorists and vehicle owners to install seat belts in four-wheelers by November 1 or face prosecution.

The statement further reads, as per the provision of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers not wearing seat belts shall be punished.

After November 1, all motor vehicle drivers and passengers travelling in four-wheelers on Mumbai roads will have to compulsorily wear seat belts, an official said, news agency PTI reported. 

Strict action will be taken against violators under section 194 (B) (1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, he stated further.
