Mizoram-Assam Border Issue: Tension Escalates Again, Assam Police Fire On Mizoram Civilians

The Deputy Commissioner said that one person was injured in the firing by the Assam Police personnel, who were guarding the inter-state border, PTI reported.

Aizawl: The tension along the Mizoram-Assam border escalated again on Tuesday when the Assam Police personnel allegedly fired on civilians of the neighbouring state injuring one, said an official.

H. Lalthlangliana, the Deputy Commissioner of Kolasib district, said the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. at the disputed Aitlang area bordering Assam’s Hailakandi district when three residents of Vairengte town went there to collect meat from a friend, a resident of Bilaipur in Assam, who invited them to come.

The Deputy Commissioner said that one person was injured in the firing by the Assam Police personnel, who were guarding the inter-state border, PTI reported.

The incident on Tuesday took place three weeks after a violent clash between the police forces of the two north-eastern states left seven people dead and injured over 60 others earlier on July 26.

More than 60 people from Assam sustained severe injuries while few people from Mizoram side were also injured.

A 10-day-long economic blockade in Assam prevented transport of goods to Mizoram following the clashes. This resulted in price rise of the essential goods in the state.

Both Assam and Mizoram following the instruction of the Central government later agreed to resolve the border dispute peacefully.

Earlier on Friday night, fresh tension erupted along Assam-Mizoram border in Assam’s Hailakandi district after a primary school was bombed by unknown miscreants at Kachurthal area ahead of the 75th Independence Day.

The primary school, located within two kilometres of the Assam-Mizoram Border, was attacked by the grenades while it was closed due to the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic.
