Tushar Gandhi Rubbishes J&K LG Manoj Sinha’s Claim That Mahatma Gandhi ‘Didn’t Have Law Degree’

J&K LG Sinha spoke about Mahatma Gandhi’s educational qualifications, claiming that 'Bapu' did not have a law degree. Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson Tushar Gandhi dismissed the assertion.

Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson and author Tushar Gandhi on Friday dismissed Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s claim that the Father of the Nation did not have a single university degree and that he qualified to practice Law even though he didn't have a Law Degree.

“M. K. Gandhi passed 2 Matrics 1 from Alfred High School Rajkot, 2nd it’s equivalent in London, British Matriculation. He acquired, by studying & passing exams a Law Degree from Inner Temple, a law College affiliated to London University & simultaneously got two diplomas one in Latin the other in French. Issued to educate the Deputy Governor of J&K,” Tushar Gandhi tweeted.

“I agree, Bapu did not hold a degree in Entire Law!” he wrote in another tweet, in an apparent dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the controversy pertaining to his degrees – a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Delhi University and a Master of Arts (MA) in political science from Gujarat University which were put into question as fake by Opposition parties such as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress, and the Janata Dal (United).

J&K LG Sinha spoke about Mahatma Gandhi’s educational qualifications while delivering a keynote address for Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Memorial Lecture at ITM Gwalior on Thursday.

“Did you know that he did not have a single university degree or qualification? There are many of us who think that Mahatma Gandhi had a law degree. No, he did not. His only qualification was a high school diploma. He qualified to practice law. He did not have a law degree,” Sinha had said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

“Gandhi did a lot for the nation. But everything that was achieved, the focal point of it was Truth. If you look at all the aspects of his life, there was nothing besides Truth in his life. Whatever the challenges, Mahatma Gandhi never abandoned truth and identified his inner voice. As a result, he became Father of the Nation,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying

Criticising the remarks, Tushar Gandhi said he dispatched a copy of Gandhi’s Autobiography to Rajbhavan Jammu “with the hope that if the Deputy Governor can read he will educate himself.”

In November last year, Tushar Gandhi joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Bharat Jodo Yatra in Maharashtra's Shegaon.
