Maha Political Crisis Mitigated As Uddhav Thackeray To Take Oath As MLC Today

The Maharashtra Chief Minister and newly elected MLC, Uddhav Thackeray will be taking oath as Member of Legislative Council today at 1 pm.

New Delhi: Maharashtra’s Chief Minister and newly elected MLC, Uddhav Thackeray will take oath as Member of Legislative Council today at 1 pm. Along with him, 8 other newly elected MLC’s will also be sworn in. Uddhav Thackeray was elected unopposed as state Legislative Council member here on Thursday. This came as a huge relief to the party as when Thackeray was elected as the Chief Minister last year in November, he was not a member of either the legislative assembly or the legislative council. According to the constitution, if any Chief minister is not the member of either house of the state legislature then within six months of taking the oath, they should be selected to become the member or else should resign from the position. After a lot of questions raised by the party regarding a delay in organising an election and also in the candidature of Thackeray, Maharashtra Legislative Council biennial elections were held and he was elected unopposed as state Legislative Council member on Thursday. According to the report by IANS, Uddhav's election to the Council will provide stability to the 6-month-old Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress alliance government in the state. He has become the second member of the Thackeray clan to enter the Legislature as an elected member after his son and Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray who became a member in October 2019. The reports said that eight others elected on Thursday included Sena's Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Rajesh Rathod from Congress, and Shashikant Shinde and Amol Mitkari from the NCP. From the BJP which is the opposition in Maharashtra, the candidates selected were Ranjitsinh Mohite-Patil, Pravin Datke, Gopichand Padalkar, and Ramesh Karad. The poll results were declared as there were only nine nominations for nine seats.
