MP: 2 men get death sentence for raping minor girl in Mandsaur, trial over in 2 months

MANDSAUR: Two months after an eight-year-old girl was raped in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur, two men were on Tuesday sentenced to death by a special court after they were found guilty. Special Judge Nisha Gupta held Irfan alias Bhaiyu, 20, and Asif, 24, guilty and sentenced them to death under the newly-introduced IPC section 376DB (punishment for rape of a woman under 12 years of age by one or more persons), PTI quoted public prosecutor B S Thakur as saying. The child was abducted while she was waiting for her father outside her school on June 26. She was gang-raped, her throat was slit and left to die. A day later, the Madhya Pradesh police arrested Irfan alias Bhaiyu, a labourer, on the basis of CCTV footage. Days later, the police made another arrest of a construction worker, Asif, after Irfan named him as an accomplice. The girl had suffered severe injuries on her neck, face, head and private parts in the incident and is undergoing treatment in Indore. Relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were invoked against the accused. On Tuesday, while the convicts were being taken out of the court by the police, one of them was hit by a BJP leader. The incident had sparked protests in different cities across the region in Madhya Pradesh demanding capital punishment for the accused.
