Lata Mangeshkar Stable, Will Return Home After Doctors' Approval: Spokesperson

The 92-year-old doyen of playback singing was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai on January 9 after she tested positive for Covid-19 and was showing mild symptoms.

New Delhi: Singing stalwart Lata Mangeshkar, who is currently admitted to a hospital in Mumbai, is stable, her spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The 92-year-old doyen of playback singing was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai on January 9 after she tested positive for Covid-19 and was showing mild symptoms.

"Lata Di is stable. Will come home after the doctors give the nod," Anusha Srinivsan Iyer, the spokesperson of Mangeshkar, told news agency PTI.

Refuting claims on the singer’s deteriorating health condition a couple of days back, Iyer had said, “It is disturbing to see false news being circulated. Please note that Lata didi is stable. Continues to be in ICU under treatment of able doctors. Please pray for her quick return home.”

According to a report on India Today, Mangeshkar’s niece Rachna Shah had earlier said that the singer was recovering well.

Two years back in November 2019, Lata Mangeshkar was admitted to the same hospital after she complained of breathing difficulties. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and was discharged after 28 days.

Known as the Queen of Melody and the Nightingale of India, Mangeshkar’s career started in 1942 when she was 13 years old. Since then, she has sung over 30,000 songs in different languages.

Considered to be one of the legends of singing in Indian cinema, Mangeshkar was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2001.

She has also received several other awards, including the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan, the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, and multiple National Film Awards.
